A wet and stormy adventure

Firstly, I should apologise for not blogging recently.  I had a blog app that obviously was struggling with IOS5 and kept freezing and losing data.  I should have just come here and continued, but fought through the app problems to no avail.  They emailed me after I complained to say that the fixes have been submitted to the app people and awaits release.... I cycled to work and back on Tuesday.  Other than a near miss with a car on the way home, it was pretty unremarkable.  I had a blog done, but the app deleted the data!  Och well.  Friday,  came straight home, intending to go for a run, but best laid plans... I ended up waiting until I'd dropped the kids at clubs and friends' houses and ran at night along Dumbarton road.  The previous day, my baby sister Diane had run her first ever 5 K race.... In 37 + minutes.  S to commemorate, I ran for 37+ minutes!  Did about 3.7 miles so do the maths regarding pace!  My way, that's us caught up on my adventures, now onto today! I got up at 8 this am.  Had a huge latte and got my gear all sorted.  It was kinda windy overnight, but fairly calm at the start, with clear skies.  I intended going Great Western Road westward for an hour and then turning back.  First red light I reached, I didn't want to stop, so I hopped the kerb and went left instead! That change in route led to a series of changed routes that led me onto the cycle path, back to GWR, through the towns and villages, back to the cycle path all the way to Maryhill, then zigzagging through the city back to the cycle route. All during the cycle, the weather itself cycled!  From calm, clear blue skies, to sleet and driving wind & rain.  I could see the mud splattered all over my running tights, and could just imagine what the back looked like! I got home, with the Garmin showing 2 hours 12 minutes, and 24.8 miles. My Ant Agent is still hiding, and I have as yet avoided ending £30 on a replacement.  I fully intended using RunKeeper too in order to compare data, but the app froze and would not start.  grrrrrr!  Technology is a pain when it does not cooperate (and when you lose bits!). I wanted to do the additional 1.4 miles to claim my first marathon, but I still think this is a distance record for non stop cycling!

A slow 5k and some confusing data streams!

I didn't do very well today. Call it post bike ride fatigue... Lack of general fitness... Post tikka masala... All of the above.... Anyway, better the guy that runs than the guys that sits on his arse, eh?

I had dinner (tikka masala) and decided that I was needing to get out and go for a run. I dressed warmly as it was windy though the sky was fairly clear... So 7 pm, nice and dark, with a perfect, clear night sky... Beautiful running conditions. I was wearing my Lidl running tights and matching top, with a very light windbreak (courtesy Kate and Steve for my 50th). I had a flashing reflector hanging from my Runners Forum UK ball cap, and reflective straps on my ankles. Need to be seen, eh! I also had my new Nike running gloves on, although in hindsight i could have done without them! I had my Garmin 310XT on as well as RunKeeper app going on my Nokia C7. I've never successfully used the RunKeeper so wanted to test it against the Garmin.

I set out on a frequently used 5 k route I call the Duntreath loop. I had the phone in the arm holster and no sound on RunKeeper, so no active data coming out of that. Garmin was showing the first mile about 9:30 pace, and I was on the slow-down from there. Next 2 miles were decidedly worse.... As I said, I was out there to be out there and not to be quick!

When I got to the 5K point, I switched the Garmin off. It showed 31:30. Sounded about right. I then fished the phone out of the holster and it showed a similar time, but 0.8 additional miles!

I got home and stripped off all the sweaty gear, anxious to compare the readouts of Garmin vs RunKeeper. The latter tracking map when you zoom in looked like I'd been running zigzags the whole way! http://runkeeper.com/user/GregUsrey/activity/60022229
Garmin is not available because the USB ANT agent thing is hiding. I'll need to find the damn thing! Meantime, I went to google maps and measured the course to measure and it is definitely a 5k course!

All in all, it was good to be out there, despite Caitlin's friends laughing about my running gear. Men in tights; maybe not the height of teenage fashion!

Ps. Forgot to say. Had the senseiser headphones on, listening to my whole playlist on random select. In future, I think I'll pick a particular playlist as sometimes you kinda want to know what is coming next!

Cheers for now....

A beautiful day for a cycle!

This being Sunday and my first blog of the week, it just shows you how dedicated my training has been :). I fully intended to do at least a 5k run as well, but an unexpected 'gift' of some whisky on Friday meant I wasn't in the best of moods for running in the morning. No excuses...

Anyway, got up this morning and made a big batch of pancakes for the brood. After that was cleaned up, I went and did a wee shop for the week. That done, I was ready to get ready! Clothing etc was already laid out (supposed to use it for the run yesterday!), so was ready fairly quickly. Got Storm out of the shed, tried to switch on the Garmin and nowt. Dead.? Will investigate later. I recently got RunKeeper app on the Nokia, so tried it for the first time. Seems to be working fine!

Route wise, the Glasgow to Dumbarton cycle, via the canal path and cycle trail is pretty well worn as I have done this route many times. I mixed it up a bit this time by moving back and forth between path and streets. It was a really nice day, albeit a bit windy. There were loads of walkers, cyclist and dog walkers about on the paths, so had to go fairly slow in lots of places. I did the wee circle round the Gardens in from of Dumbarton Castle. Quite pretty looking out ver a peaceful Clyde river.

I didn't have time to dally, so headed straight back. I took the roads through Old Kirkpatrick and then back onto the cycle trail. it was at this point that I really started to feel it in my legs. Combine this with fairly strong winds and I really started to struggle and could feel the strain in my thighs! I wasn't exactly pushing it, but I did try to maintain a decent pace. Trouble wit RunKeeper is I didn't have it set for coaching or anything so was getting no feedback from it at all. No idea of pace, so just kept peddling. The last 5 miles or so were quite sore, and. Was glad to be home.

RunKeeper showed 20.? Miles in 1:38-ish and avg. pace of 4:32? But failed to upload to the website. It said go to support, which I did. By the time I sorted out the connection, the data disappeared! Such a shame as I really wanted it to work! Hopefully now that the settings are correct, it should upload automatically next time!

Before it got dark, I went out and gave Storm a wee wash-down as the mud and dirt were pretty bad! Looks good as new now, putting her back into the shed!

Well, now that I am rested and recovering, I am really glad I went out. Meant to go with Rab today, but thought he was going hill walking. He shoulda told me he didn't go! Anyhoo.... Next time!

Trail vs Fell Running

As part of my birthday present, Anne & Bob and Helen got me a £50 run4it voucher. I'd always fancied trail running and used the voucher toward a great pair of Salomon Speedcross trail shoes. Before yesterday, I'd only ever worn then out once and that was on Storm's second outing (a previous blog). So pretty much they were virgin and very clean. Not any longer!

Yesterday being Guy Fawkes night, we were needing to prepare for a bonfire and firework party at Rab's house, so he and I couldn't really go far for a hill walk. We decide that Dumgoyne would be a good candidate as it was close and we could be up and down in an hour. As we had 2 hours, we could even go beyond and run back the side of Dumgoyne.

I decide to wear my Runner's Forum hat, my new Nike running gloves (replacements for a similar pair that were finally falling apart!), my running tights, long sleeved running top that Kerry & Craig got me for my birthday, the Adidas compression pants, two sock system and the black wind-proof jacket that Jane purchased for me. It was 2 Celsius when we were in the car travelling. I actually had a layer of ice on the windscreen for the first time this season! The weather was perfect with wee patches of wispy fog here and there. I put pics up of this excursion on Facebook. I'll really need to start using photos here or putting them somewhere I could link to them.

Rab and I got there at 8:50 and got the last parking place in the layby. Once we got the footwear sorted, we were off at 9 AM. The trail is roadway for a bit, then grassy field and then once it gets to the hill itself, almost straight up. Wet and boggy in places and pure mud in others, but practically straight up for most of the journey. I can tell you, the term fell running had no place in this part of the excursion! We walked the early part of the journey, I trudged heavy-legged for the straight up bits, and then when we got to the summit, we enjoyed the views for 10 minutes. At this point, I decided it was too hot to keep the wind proof jacket on any longer and dumped it into my rucksack.

We walked down a very steep trail down the back of Dumgoyne, and at this point, my Salomons were gripping pretty well. It was mega steep in bits and some scree so I did slip now and again. Once that was past, grassy slopes meant that I could finally run a bit, so we jogged along at a nice wee pace before the next uphill. After another half hour of walking, we decided to turn round and head back. As it was mostly downhill grassy slopes, we ran/jogged quite a bit, and the feeling is one that is hard to relate in writing... Really liberating! I was gripping well for the most part, losing my foot in mud and bog, and really getting those Solomons dirty! The front slope of Dumgoyne (we avoided the summit and just went round the worst bit) was the alternate path, grassy and smooth for the most part but still quite steep. I managed well for the most part and only really slipped once, but righted myself before crashing! Once we got down to the road part of the trail, we stated the cool down and made it back to the car truly invigorated!

I meant to bring my Garmin, but when uploading Cycle to work data, I left it on, and the battery was dead! Some detail here from Rab's RunKeeper app! http://runkeeper.com/user/GregUsrey/activity/58751412?utm_campaign=frnd-tag-st&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Op

It was a great morning out, complemented wit a wee trip to Glengoyne Distillery. Too much temptation not to pop in!

Cycle to work scheme

As most will know by now, Storm and I are the best of friends. I purchased Storm from Billy Bilsland cycles near Glasgow Green via the Cycle to Work scheme. Effectively, I'll rent Storm for a year and at the end of the second year, I'll pay a nominal fee to purchase. Included in the deal is about £100 worth of gear. A great deal and most employers and major cycle sales places participate in the scheme.

As I bought Storm via the cycle to work scheme, I thought that I might as well cycle to work occasionally. I did so this Friday as the forecast was decent. I took a winding route in and a slightly different route home. I did not choose the most direct routs but those that avoided heavy traffic and traffic lights as much as possible. for map detail, you can always check out the Garmin links below.

Garmin data suggests that I was slightly faster home than to work.

Halloween, 2011

The extent of my outdoor adventures yesterday was taking the young'n out for Halloween. Our local councillors and Land & Environmental Services department organised a brilliant wee kids party at Knightswood Park. Took Lee through the 'haunted house' and although I thought it was a but tame, he was shit-scared and attached himself to me like a limpet! Dookin for apples was replaced with spearing them wit a fork! Lee got one, but I ate it. He was there, after all, for junk, not fruit!

Tramway theatre group were putting on a brill we show, then Jane called to say Lee's friends were champing at the bit to go halloweening / guising / trick-or-treating! We left and came home, and then Jane & others took over whilst I sat down to get some work done. No trick-or-treaters all night till I sat down, then I was up and down like a yo yo!

Did I mention that it was pushing down rain the whole time? Yeah, forgot that. I wasn't too soaked but by the time the kids came home heavy laden with junk, they were soaked through! So Lee in the Bath and Caitlin in the Shower and I could finally Sit down to work (and sneak treats for their goody bags!)

All in all, a typical Scottish Halloween!

Storm's second outing

It was a mixed bag today for Storm. After yesterday's good 5 k run, a long leisurely cycle was in order! I knew it was going to rain, but didn't care. I went out and followed the river for a while, past the new Riverside Museum, back and forth over pedestrian and road bridges. The Clyde at Glasgow Green was certainly busy with those long rowing boats! I popped in to Billy Bilsland (Storm's old home) to ask about the mud guards, but there were busy so I just headed off.

From the Green, I then went through the city centre... Up Buchanan Street. Who'd thought it was a financial crisis with hunnerts of shoppers out there!

Up through the city and then back down to the cycle path. I followed that out to Yoker and then started a wide loop back toward the house. When I got to Duntreath, I felt a funny rumble at the back. Stopped and looked, and saw the back tyre flatter than a pancake! How it got so flat so quick is hard to say as there is no obvious damage.

I walked the mile and a half home and have just put the bike back in the shed. I'll need to replace the tube and see if that is all there is to it. Hopefully east job, but as it is the back tyre, it is a little harder than the front to replace!

Updates later....

Battlefield 3 for Xbox 360

Ok, I know the Xbox is not an outdoor adventure, but I have to cross train, don't I?

I got the game yesterday after a lot of build-up in the media. I've had Battlefield: Bad Company for some time and only played B:2 once or twice. Before the Guinness and wee halfs started to affect my romance too much, it was quite a game! I absolutely love the HD graphics... The maps are HUGE - large enough for layers to fly freakin jets around FFS!

I also have to admit that it took me 10 or 15 minutes to find the enemy! Before that, I kept shooting at anyone I could see. Fortunately for me, unlike B:BC you don't seem to incur team damage and team kills in B:3!

As I never really played B:2, I'm not really sure how to sort my guy's load out, and I haven't as yet found a gun I really like. It is a she, for me that there isn't one with automatic aim!

I tried a jet (crashed). I tried a helicopter (crashed). Ut man oh man, those tanks and jeeps don't half sprint! There is a warning that you lose manoeuvrability when you sprint, and the likely result for me? Yes, you guessed it.... (crashed).

Looking forward to many many more hours of enjoying this game!

5 k run on a nice autumn evening

My running mate decided to bugger off to the hills without me, so it was up to me to decide my own fate toady. I decided time wise and weather-wise to run today and cycle at the weekend. As Rab wasnae here, I went back to one of my old set routes for 5 K. I'll post a link to the route and stats via my Garmin 310XT below.

My first mile I was blowing hard trying to get my rhythm and breath going, but Garmin showed 8:40 mile. My best this year. Second mile slightly slower at 9:06 ? but then my fitness was showing as the third mile I really struggled.

In the end, my time was 28:30 which is a full 2 minutes better than last week, and my best 5 k this year. Now if I can build on that and better pace and even distance in the next few weeks I'll really be pleased!

First step: get fit (again)

After a few years of slowly improving times and distances on the running front, 2011 has turned out to be a very poor year. In order to get fitter and get back to my running ways, I've started to mix up the training a bit with some hill walking, fell running / trail running and even cycling. Today I've picked my new bike and hope that I can get some good cycling done during the autumn and winter. Hopefully 2012 will bring solid improvements!
